Aiko Kobayashi Gray – Textile Artist
Aiko Kobayashi Gray is a textile artist who weaves the experiences she has gathered from diverse cultures and landscapes into her work. Born in Japan, she studied oil painting at Joshibi University of Art and Design in Tokyo. Later, her travels through Europe and Central America exposed her to a wide range of traditional cultures, greatly expanding her creative perspective.
During her journeys, she found deep inspiration in textiles, which led her to begin her career as a textile artist in the early 1970s.
Using natural fibers such as cotton, linen, wool, and silk, she creates richly textured tapestries and scarves that center around the theme of "The Experience of the Journey." Her work poetically and fantastically harmonizes memories from her travels—such as the dry winds of Andalusia, the vivid colors of Guatemala, the playful spirit of children and animals close to home, and the stories of her family—into a singular narrative told through her weavings.
For over 30 years, she has exhibited her work in galleries across Japan, Spain, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Since 1998, she has been based in her studio in Walnut Creek, California, where she continues to create.
A pivotal moment in her creative journey came in 1985, when she first visited Guatemala and was captivated by the richness of its artisan traditions. She lived in Antigua for several years and still visits once or twice a year to learn from master weavers and expand her personal collection of Maya textiles. This extensive collection and the knowledge she continues to gain from it breathe new life into her work time and time again.
アイコ・コバヤシ・グレイ ─ テキスタイルアーティスト
アイコ・コバヤシ・グレイは、多様な文化と風土で得てきた経験を作品に反映させるテキスタイルアーティストです。日本で生まれ、東京の女子美術大学（Joshibi University of Art and Design）で油絵を学びました。その後、ヨーロッパや中米を巡り、多彩な伝統文化に触れることで創作の視野を大きく広げています。
旅の中でテキスタイルから強いインスピレーションを受け、1970年代初頭にテキスタイルアーティストとしてのキャリアをスタートさせました。
コットン、リネン、ウール、シルクといった天然繊維を中心に用い、質感豊かなタペストリーやスカーフを織り上げる彼女の作品は、「旅の体験（The Experience of the Journey）」をテーマに展開されます。アンダルシアの乾いた風、グアテマラの鮮烈な色彩、そして身近な子どもや動物の遊び心、そして家族の物語も──これらの記憶が織物の中で詩的かつ幻想的に調和し、一つの物語を紡ぎ出します。
過去30年以上にわたり、日本とスペイン、そしてアメリカはサンフランシスコ・ベイエリアのギャラリーで作品を発表。1998年よりカリフォルニア州ウォルナットクリークのアトリエを拠点に創作を続けています。
1985年、グアテマラに初訪問した際に豊かな手工芸文化に魅了されたことは、彼女の創作における大きな転機となりました。アンティグアに数年間暮らし、現在も年に１・２度現地を訪れては巨匠たちから技術を学び、自身のマヤ織物コレクションを拡充しています。その豊富なコレクションと学びが、作品に絶えず新たな息吹を与えています。
